Sure it’s a Great Wee Club.

We all turn up, two nights every week

And gather by the wall like a herd of sheep.

Rain, wind hail or snow, sure nought can deter,

All eager to run…and get the wind in our ‘hair’.

Some arrive late… you know who you are,

And join in the warm-up, but you’re watched from afar.

Our coaches miss nothing, even though they’re over 50

Skinny legs in those tights will never look nifty!

At seven sharp, the warm-up begins

And our three ‘handsome’ coaches, take the drills in turns.

“Use your arms and don’t shuffle”, coach Michael explains

But from Roy ‘Work, Work, Work’ is the aim of his game.

“Get on your spikes now, and pay attention,

These are your groups, it’s a 5k session”

‘What group am I in?’ can often be heard

Coz a trip to the loo, for some is preferred.

Then we all do some strides, before running like blazes,

“Stay with your group…it’s not a day at the races”.

But that ‘competitive streak’ some of us just can’t fight

And must lead their group almost every night.

Every December  it’s Dromore’s turn to shine,

A Cross Country event, will the weather be fine?

Today many ran and Brian hit the gas

Not like the stuff  that comes from Colin,s ***

And of course there’s the kids where the future must lie,

Sure they all make it look as easy as pie

Keep up the hard training and strive for your goals

There’s medals to be had, bronze silver and gold.

Socializing and nights out, sure we’re all good at that,

Parties, Hog Roasts and of course here to-night.

Thank you all for coming, this 12th of December

Now let’s get dancing, and make this a night to remember.

100 day countdown to Ireland’s biggest international athletics event

Athletes meet for European Cross Country Championships training camp

There are only 100 days left until Ireland’s biggest athletics event this year, the SPAR European Cross Country Championships.  This is the first time that Ireland has hosted a European Championship athletics event and it will be held in Santry Demesne on the 13th of December.

The SPAR European Cross Country Championships will see the continent’s finest cross country runners taking part along with some of Ireland’s top athletes.  The Championships will also mark the 30th anniversary of when John Treacy won the World Cross Country title in Limerick.

This weekend some of Ireland’s top cross country runners are taking part in a pre European Cross country Championships training camp in Santry.  Those included in the training squad are 2006 U-23 European silver medallist Fionnuala Britton, her Sli Cualann teammate Deirdre Byrne, who recently competed in Berlin at the World Championships, and Alan McCormack who was part of last year’s European Cross Country team.

Ireland’s team manager is Anne Keenan-Buckley and she is looking forward to event in December.  “We are getting to the final stages of preparation now so things are getting serious.  The fact that we have a major championship on home soil is a huge incentive for our athletes.  Everyone wants to be involved so that means we have great competition for places on the team, which is always good,” Keenan-Buckley said ahead of the camp.

We have Martin (Fagan) and Mary (Cullen) who are in the US and have had a tough time recently with injuries but they should hopefully both be back to fitness soon.  We also have the likes of Ciara Mageean and the Ffrench O’Carroll sisters who are very exciting talents.  The training camp will give us a chance to work with the athletes and look at training and racing over the next couple of months to ensure they are in good shape for Santry in December,” she went on to say.

Ireland has a fantastic history at the European Cross Country Championships especially in recent years.  Fionnuala Britton took silver at U-23 level in the European Cross Country Championships, while last year Mary Cullen was close to taking a bronze medal in Brussels before finally finishing fourth..  Cullen then went on to take indoor bronze at the European Championships in Turin earlier this year.

Liam Hennessy, President of Athletics Ireland, is looking forward to the event.  “With 100 days to go the countdown really begins here for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships.  We have been working with European Athletics on this event for over 18 months and now there is a real excitement that we are bringing a top class athletics event to Ireland.  We are working around the clock to make this the biggest and most exciting European Cross Country Championships and we hope that the athletics community and the wider sports community in Ireland will be out to support what will be a great event for the country.”

People are being encouraged to snap up their tickets for the event as soon as possible and they can be bought online at www.ticketmaster.ie.  Prices for the tickets are €20 for adults and €10 for U-16, while a special family ticket which will admit two adults and two children is available at a price of €40.  There are also discounted tickets available for all athletics club members.  Senior member tickets will be €10 plus service charge while juvenile member tickets will be free and details are available from local clubs.

For more information and regular updates on the event and to sign up to the mailing list for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships then log on to www.Dublin2009.ie.  Athletics Ireland is supported nationally in running this event by the Irish Sports Council, Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council, RTÉ and Clonliffe Harriers.

Wednesday 20th May 2009

Oh what a night ! - Oh what a turn out ! - Oh what results !

Once again a great turn out by the Dromore club on what must rank as the wettest race of the year so far. Sixteen athletes braved the elements  as the gun signaled the start of the race and the start of the rain. The first home for Dromore, Brian McKee worked hard to finish in a very creditable third overall and also third in category (M40). Next home for the club Paul Cain j(M40) just piping Karl Dunn (MO) on the line, 10th and 11th respectively, both 4th in class. The ladies also preformed well with Gillian Burns 3rd female and 2nd in class (F35), and Aine McNeill (F40)  and Amanda Russell (F45) both finishing 1st in class. The remaining Dromore athletes all came home in excellent times in what was a hard run race.

Belfast City Marathon 2009

This years Belfast Marathon yielded a great haul of results for the Dromore club. Nigel Grier one of two club entrants in the men's marathon came home in a very impressive time of 2:49:59 earning him a 17th overall place and 1st in class (V45) the other male entrant, Seamus McKeown , finished in 3:46:56 giving a very creditable 6th in class (V60). In the ladies race Julia Kelly turned in an excellent time of 4:01:45 followed by Bronagh Linton in 4:16:43 and not to be deterred by a recently sprained ankle causing much concern, Kim McDonald done extremely well to come home in 5:18:31.

The Relay race teams also brought home the bacon with a terrific 2nd place for the Dromore Girlies in 2:54:37 and their male counterparts coming 7th in 2:37:09. Other Dromore athletes were also to be seen aiding and abetting various charity relay teams, and for some of whom one leg was not enough of a challenge, ( watch out Mandy he's out to get you!). Well done all.
